Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is a highly-reputable collegiate Greek-letter fraternity established January 5, 1911 at Indiana University Bloomington. Kappa Alpha Psi is the first fraternity founded on the west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity was originally called Kappa Alpha Nu before the changing of its name on April 5, 1915.
Kappa Alpha Psi was established by ten African American students at the University of Bloomington to provide an alternative to school organizations whose membership were exclusively based on racial criterion and also to strengthen the bond of friendship among African American students.
The membership of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity has never been limited based on color, creed or even national origin. The fraternity sort after progress and unity amongst its members. Kappa Alpha Psi motto (honorable achievement in every field of human endeavor as well as training for leadership) was a tenet which was made a core part of their tradition and everyday life.
The major objectives of the Kappa Alpha Psi are:
- To unite college men of culture, patriotism and honor in a bond of fraternity
- To encourage honorable achievement in various fields of endeavor
- To promote and encourage the spiritual, social, intellectual, and moral development of its members
- To assist in the achievement of college/university goals
- To inspire and support service geared towards the enhancement of humanity
Kappa Alpha Psi supports and funds a number of community development plans and initiatives that that includes scholarship programs for high school students, Kappa camp which teaches team building, fosters self-respect and respect for others through leadership sessions.
The Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation is the philanthropic division of the fraternity which was established in 1981. The foundation is aimed at raising funds which are channeled into scholarship programs and after-school activities targeted at the overall development of youths in the society.
